Hello
Welcome. I'm Berni Morris-Smith. Originally from UK, a pharmacist, Ph.D Microbiologist, seasoned pharmaceutical industry professional in drug development and clinical trials, with a heart and passion for Australia and First Nation health. I have worked in industry academia hospital and community and have a Grad. Cert. In Aboriginal Studies.
I have a passion and zest for life, to live it to the full; connecting with people to find purpose in places and create possibilities. My heart is to create and participate in opportunities for equal access for all people for all medicines whether regional rural or remote.
My Story
I have worked in the pharmaceutical industry since 1991 after graduating from The University of London with a Ph.D in Microbiology and Genetics looking at resistance mechanisms of bacteria focusing on the 4 Quinolones. My love of health care started at an early age when at 16, I decided I wanted to become a pharmacist . I did achieve my primary goal but also developed a love to pursue research further. Throughout my career in clinical trials I have travelled the world, met inspiring colleagues and been involved in life changing products which has given me much satisfaction. In 1999, I moved to Australia to explore possibilities of work with the love of this great nation. I have been privileged to work throughout Europe USA and Asia Pacific and lead a start up company, consult on many projects but nothing thrills me more than the challenges Australia brings. In 2014, I moved from Sydney to the Sunshine Coast to be involved in a educational training role in a brand new hospital commissioning project, which led to a statewide research role, being part of a core team developing clinical trials through Telehealth, which is now a national initiative under the Australian Teletrial Program. Industry, academia and government has given me broad experience of various work place environments. I have continued to remain current in my Pharmacy whilst consulting something I always knew at 16 would "come in handy". During Covid I was proud to be part of the frontline Vaccination teams across the Sunshine Coast region of Queensland. At this time too I studied A Grad Cert in Aboriginal Studies to understand more of our First Nation people here in Australia, where my heart and passion for their culture and health has grown since being involved in a Indigenous Non for Profit focussed foundations in Central Australia which has touched my heart and enabled me to connect to people that I now call family. I am now forming connection in other communities in various parts Australia and some of the health challenges I have seen "cannot be unseen". It has made me realise and impassioned me to now visualise weaving my multiple health care experience to make a difference. I want to go on a journey to help others as I first initially set out to do as that 16 yr old wished to.. this journey is just beginning ..with pharmacy, clinical trials consulting and education, Ethics Committees, telehealth, vaccinations, medication reviews, education and training. I have an infectious love of adventure as well to blend with all my work skills forming a strategic generalist approach to healthcare assistance in regional rural and remote health .
I look forward to working with you and helping make a difference for others,
Thankyou for your interest.
